520 _aASEAN appears unwilling to put pressure on Burma's military regime to promote change and accept democratic processes, citing the Association's long standing commitment to non-intervention. This article suggests that ASEAN's pronouncements are riddled with contradictions, that it serves to maintain it's members own authoritarian regimes, that it has not repositioned itself "as an effective agent of regional cooperation and security" and therefore has little interest in supporting change in Burma. Notes some examples of the cosy relationship between Singapore and Burma as evidence of ASEAN's shortcomings.
