520 _aThis article looks at the military aspects of the conflict between the Ugandan armed forces and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). Ostensibly the LRA's aim is to overthrow the government of Yoweri Museveni but its practice of targetting and abducting children has alienated and terrorised the general population and destabilised large parts of northern Uganda. The LRA is outnumbered ten to one yet the conflict has dragged on for twenty years partly because of lack of capability of the armed forces, partly the skill of the guerillas, and partly because the LRA can take refuge in Sudan where government forces cannot pursue them.
