520 | _a"This study revisits principles of international relations theory and, in particular, the influence of geopolitics on Chinese strategic thinking". The commons of the title are the seas, the skies, and space. The article considers China's long term strategic goals in the light of the 2004 Defence White Paper which urged the development of the PLA Navy, and cautions against projecting Western attitudes and assumptions onto China. Discusses how China might use its growing power in relation to Taiwan, to Korean reunification, and to energy security. Also considers implications for American policy particularly in the contested zones and maritime approaches (the South China Sea being among the latter). | ||
