The German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee was attacking allied merchant shipping in the Atlantic. Pursued by Allied navies to the South Atlantic, Graf Spee engaged in a severe battle with the Royal Navy cruisers Ajax, Exeter, and Achilles off the river Plate on 13 December 1939. Damaged in the action Graf Spee sought shelter in the neutral port of Montevideo. The British mounted a disinformation campaign which was so successful that Captain Langsdorff scuttled his ship and later shot himself. | |
