520 3 _aIn 1856 a Forest Department was set up to manage Burma's substantial timber assets and restrain the laissez faire attitudes which had led to the rapid denuding of the coastal province of Tenasserim. This made the forests a political issue from the middle of the 19th century as from the outset the Dept. was unpopular with shifting farmers, timber traders, and even officials from other government departments. In the late 20th century a unified forest policy is once again in prospect but may also auger accelerated deforestation as Burma plays development catch-up with its Southeast Asian neighbours. This book looks in particular at the effect of scientific forestry management during British colonial rule.
