520 _aLearning from the experiences of Mexico and New Zealand, Australia is trying to make the best use its time as a non-permanent member of the UNSC to benefit small and medium sized countries. Australia was elected in the first round "with an emphatic 140 votes". This article considers what scope there is for non-permanent members to influence the Security Council then assesses Australia's first nine months, acknowledging that it is difficult for any country to meet all the expectations placed on it even its own.
