520 _aThis article presents two focuses: 1) the improvement in cross-Strait relations affecting the risk of entrapment for Washington and the fear of abandonment for Taipei since 2008, 2) the reason why United States provides Taiwan with strategic reassurance. It then concludes that the United States and Taiwan seemed to have reached a consensus that the current informal alliance between both nations should be nurtured by means of strategic reassurance, bearing in mind China's potentially expansionist behaviour.
