520 _aThis article seeks to bring analytical clarity to the concept of military power projection in the Indian context and to explore the potential range of power projection capabilities India possess in the coming years. The article proceeds in three parts . (1) The concept of military power projection is defined and nine types of power projection missions are identified. (2) India's past use of power projection and future needs are briefly discussed in the light of contemporary strategic priorities. (3) The final section discusses the utility of each of the three components of conventional military power (sea, air and land) to fulfill the nine missions.
