520 _aSo called "smoke sessions" are a common form of punishment in the U.S. Army, they are also illegal. This article looks at the distinction between corrective training and punishment often meted out by NCOs to soldiers, and calls for official documents to be revised to make the differences clear. Argues further that soldiers on active duty are likely to use the same kinds of unethical, illegal and cruel methods in dealing with those over whome they have arbitrary power e.g. Iraqi civilians.
