This is because of the volume of world trade that transits the sea lanes of the region and because the US Navy's new (October 2007) strategy concentrates naval operations in the western Pacific and the Indian oceans. This in turn increases the importance to the US of the South China Sea and the Malacca Strait. Littoral powers are concerned about direct foreign involvement but at the same time also want foreign support and assistance.
