By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: 2006Subject(s): Online resources: In: Jane's Intelligence Review Vol 18 No 12, December 2006, pp.22-26Summary: The GCC states are enjoying dramatic increases in revenues and many have huge budget surpluses from high oil prices. However as government spending is currently the driving force of economic activity the states are looking to economic diversification against the day when oil runs out - Bahrain and Oman each have less than 15 years of reserves at present production levels. This article argues that economic diversification alone is not enough, political and social reforms will also be required.
