This report examines the economic importance of the major sea lanes of communication (SLOCs) in Southeast Asia, specifically the Strait of Malacca, Sunda Strait, Lombok Strait, Makassar Strait, and the South China Sea. Describes in detail the patterns of trade throughout these waterways to show the relative economic dependence of various nations on these routes. The author goes on to assess the short and long term impacts of assumed closure of each of the critical straits regardless of the reason, whether natural disaster, human accident, blockade or war.
