For both Japan and South Korea, this has seen an increased focus on the development of layered defences, with well-equipped surface vessels forming an outer ring capable of providing anti-air warfare (AAW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) as well as defending critical Sea Lines of Communication.
