Study of the role of Indonesia's military in government, characterised as the dwifungsi-democratization problem. The book is arranged by themes rather than chronologically and aims to explain why the military adapted positively to some democratic demands but not to others. Five areas are considered: regime maintenance; doctrinal adaptation; internal security policy; the development of military ideology; and the civil-military discourse both in the final years of Soeharto's rule and after.
