Professor Yahuda argues that the great power dynamics in East Asia have provided SE Asia with a relatively stable external environment. However rapid economic growth in China and elsewhere may generate destabilising pressures and heighten tensions with Taiwan and Japan as may another crisis in Sino-U.S. relations. Suggests there is a role for ASEAN and its members in helping to maintain stability by fostering and supporting contact and integration. Paper delivered at the Fourth Asia and Pacific Lecture organized by ISEAS, Singapore, on 24 August 2005.
