Of the Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland) some are not members of NATO and some not members of the EU. This book looks at the impact of the European Unions 1999 decision to develop its own military capabilities on relations between the Nordic states and the EU and NATO, and on the the Nordic states' own defence positions. The book is thus an assessment of overlapping and interlocking multilateral security and economic communities, and the tensions between national and international policies.
