At independence, Tanganyika did not have a clearly defined conception of defence. This had serious implications on the military, where the British still held sway. The Tanganyika Rifles Mutiny in 1964 represented a rejection of British command in a newly independent but fast Africanizing Commonwealth country. It also signalled the breakdown of the British military command structure. Why then were the British Commandos called to quell the mutiny? Also includes an overview of military intervention in Africa.
