The era of Archibald Henderson had encompassed two wars worthy of examination from the standpoint of the nation's history. One, which had been purely internal, was the protracted campaign against the Creek and Seminole Indians. Henderson, known as the “Grand Old Man of the Marine Corps,” was appointed Commandant in 1820 and served in that role for 38 years, shaping the legacy and traditions of the Marine Corps for years to come.
