Naval Forces Vol XXXII No 6, 2011, pp.76-82 (41)Summary: Over the decades the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) developed into a modern fleet with excellent trained personnel and a well-balanced inventory for surface combatants, amphibious ships, support vessels, submarines, and naval helicopters. Such a well-balanced fleet is required to guarantee Malaysia's territorial integrity and national sovereignty as well as the security of Malaysian nationals and their properties. Thus the core mission of the RMN is to prepare and deploy naval forces to protect Malaysia's maritime interests in peacetime and in times of conflict. This report is in-depth analysis of the RMN's role, assets, and plans but also reflect upon the significance of international cooperation with Malaysia's neighbours, namely ASEAN's key maritime countries Indonesia and Singapore to provide for mairitme security in the South China Sea and adjacent regions.
