There is a growing probability that US armed forces will be called on to conduct operations in urban areas (known to the US Army as MOUT: Military Operations in Urbanized Terrain). This research report was prepared for the United States Army to identify how well prepared it is to conduct such operations. The report draws on case studies of three recent events of MOUT involving the US Army - Panama 1989, Somalia 1992/93, and Chechnya 1994/96. One of the conclusions is that information operations are increasingly important.
