Facsimile printing of the 1877 first edition.
Tells the stories and exploits of the numerous irregular combatants who fought on the side of the South in the American Civil War. The guerillas (at least some of whom were already armed criminals) were highly effective - though small in number they often tied down large forces through surprise attacks and ambushes; they also had a reputation for ruthlessness but in this were fully matched by some on the Union side. Names such as Charles Quantrell (also identifed as William Quantrill), and Frank and Jesse James are well known but the book covers many others.
