Jungle and forest operations : dislocating technology / William F Owen - 2008

The modern infantryman's technological advantages are far less useful in jungles or forests than in open or even urban terrain. This article looks at some of the particular difficulties presented by such environments. Notes that helicopters remain useful but require high maintenance and are vulnerable, with few Asian militaries operating heavy lift machines. Communications such as radios (especially VHF) and GPS systems can be degraded by jungle cover. UAVs may offer benefits with the ability to loiter and use synthetic aperture radar. Training is still considered essential although few western militaries other than UK USA and France undertake jungle warfare training.
