Argues that Aceh's quest for a separate identity was not fundamentally about oil or Islam, 'though both have played their part, but about ethnic nationalism. Islam may have become more important post tsunami because mosques, being better built, were often the only buildings left standing in coastal areas. Thus symbolism also plays a part in the power mix of politics, religion, and ethnicity.
