N2  - Until recently no systems existed to counter incoming rockets or mortar rounds. This article considers the inherrent difficulties such systems must overcome (very fast, very accurate radar plus trajectory calculations), describes gun based solutions (Raytheon Centurion and Rheinmetall-Oerlikon Contraves Ahead Skyshield), a possible rocket based product from Israel, and laser based concepts from Raytheon and Northrop Grumman. The article also raises the problem posed by parallel development work on insensitive projectiles - ones that will be unaffected by impact of bullets, sympathetic explosion, or cooking by microwave
