Special forces, strategy and the war on terror : warfare by other means / Alastair Finlan. - London : Routledge, 2007 - xvi, 184 p.

There is a marked difference between the UK and the USA concerning openness about Special Forces and their operations; in Britain considerable efforts are used to prevent publication of information directly concerning special forces. This book argues that the drawbacks of such secrecy far outweigh any benefits. Also argues that there is an inherent inability in mainstream military thinking to make best use of Special Forces. The book considers and compares UK and US Special Forces in terms of strategy, Cold War era campaigns, issues of command and control, the relationship between Special Forces and mainstream military cultures and equipment, and then looks at how perceptions of Special Forces and their roles have changed since 9-11. Includes discussion of particular events such as Operation Anaconda. Bibliography, index.
