Study of the role of diplomacy in a selection of conflicts over the last century. Diplomacy can sometimes mitigate confict but in other cases diplomatic advice may have little or no effect. As the editors observe in the introduction effective diplomacy depends on people, but no matter how good the diplomats may be political and military leaders may not act on the advice given.
