Discussion of the concepts of war and the warrior and how the notion of the latter has evolved from the time of the ancient Greeks to the modern era. War, it is argued, is horrible - a reality that has been brought to public awareness during the 20th century as never before. Nonetheless this book suggests that so long as war is part of the human condition so too shall warriors be needed, because warriors provide standards of behaviour and meet psychological and other societal needs.
