One of the effects of globalisation has been substantial growth in the mobility of people around the world. Added to traditional movements of refugees, forced labour, trade, and imperialism are expatriate workers, economic migrants, and retirees. The trend has been influenced by the international job market, quicker and cheaper transport, improved communications technology, and changing government attitudes to emigration and immigration. This study considers the impact of these developments in terms of political control, financial aspects such as the importance of remittances, brain drains, attitudes of diasporas to their homelands and vice versa, international crime, and likely future trends.
