Following the sudden death of President Niyazov on 21 December 2006 external powers (China, Iran, Russia, and the USA) have been competing for influence in Turkmenistan. The country has strategic significance because of its large gas deposits. This report argues that the outcome of this struggle will have consequences throughout Central Asia.
