Singapore's political economy, 1997-2007 /

Since the Asian financial crisis Singapore's economy has continued the developmental state paradigm, but has also become highly focussed on "globalization compatibility" in which Singapore's government linked companies become multinational companies with large scale overseas investments and operations. At the same time the government has pursued free trade arrangements and promoted the image of Singapore as a safe investment destination. This article looks at developments in the Singapore economy since 1997 and wonders whether managed globalization will continue to serve it well, or whether it would ultimately be outperformed by the true free market.
