<br/><br/> Although the Philippines did not suffer as much as other countries from the effects of the Asian Financial Crisis one effect was the creation of conditions conducive to the emergence of populist presidencies that promised much but could not deliver. Ten years on the Philippines continues to be seen as a piece of Latin America in East Asia because it has poor political stability, economic underdevelopment, and huge social inequalities.
