N2  - The death of former Indonesian president Suharto marks the end of an era of strongmen leaders in Southeast Asia. This article suggests that the passing of the others (Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew, Malaysia's Mahathir Mohammad, and Thailand's King Bhumibol) may have a more destabilising effect in their respective countries than did Suharto's because Indonesia's political scene has already evolved to something more resilient since Suharto was forced out of office
