N2  - When it comes to dealing with insurgencies there is no simple "one size fits all" solution, no standard plan for a successful counterinsurgency strategy. Using the Philippines, Malaya, Northern Ireland, and Vietnam as examples this paper shows that each insurgency has unique characteristics and consequently each requires a different kind of response. However there are some basic principles which are critical to achieving success. The article is highly critical of current U.S. defense planning which concentrates on conventional warfare, and recommends that in peacetime militaries would be well advised to  establish permanent units for the study of counterinsurgency concepts
