Draining the swamp : democracy promotion, state failure, and terrorism in 19 Middle Eastern countries / James A Piazza - 2007

Statistical analysis of terrorist acts in the Middle East between 1972 and 2003 that tries to identify the effects of democracy and state cohesion. Finds that states that are more democratic are more prone to terrorist attacks than those that are dictatorships. Also finds that weak states or those that suffer periods of instability are more likely to suffer attacks. Concludes that fostering democracy will not of itself reduce terrorism.
