Energy-hungry countries line up for Central Asian reserves / Daniel Kimmage - 2006

The five Central Asian nations (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan) have substantial reserves of natural resources - oil, gas, hydroelectric capacity, water, and uranium - and consequently feature in the grand strategy of world powers especially Russia and China. This article considers the competing interests of the major players, notes the importance of long distance pipelines for exports, and the fact that demand outstrips supply.
