As Malaysia approaches its 50th birthday, racial and religious tensions are jeopardising its economic and social success. UMNO, the ruling political party which has so effectively led Malaysia's economic development, may now be a source of some of the country's current problems as it tries to out manoeuvre PAS the Islamist opposition party.
