The United States has been encouraging missile defence cooperation among its allies in NE Asia as an alternative to strategic defence. However North Korea's actions and China's growing arsenal of missiles is tempting U.S. allies to develop their own independent weapons systems. Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea each have or are thought to be developing indigenous ballistic or cruise missiles.
