When the Shiites rise / Vali Nasr - 2006

When the United States toppled Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq it did not get the regime change it expected. Liberating the Shiite majority appears to be contributing to a wider destabilisation that will upset the sectarian balance not only in Iraq but possibly the whole of the middle east. This article looks at the opportunities thus presented for closer engagement between the USA and Iran, and the risks that at worst Iraq may collapse leading to regional war. Draws uncomfortable parallels with events in British India in 1947.
