Argues the China's defence industries are benefitting from a process of gradual but persistent improvements. Consequently previous Western assumptions about weaknesses and limitations are questioned; instead it is now thought that some sectors are producing a wide range of increasingly advanced weapons that in the short term have direct relevance to possible conflict over Taiwan, and in the longer term for China's position in Asia.
