Provides a definition of Fourth-Generation Warfare (4GW) and explains how and why it is an evolution of insurgency. Shows 4GW is a development of Mao Tse Tung's revolutionary warfare that has evolved through more recent events from the Vietnam War to Al Qaeda and Iraq. The book is critical of over-reliance on high-technology and network centric warfare concepts because these are only valid against similarly equipped and motivated forces. Calls for a restructuring of U.S. armed forces to enable them to effectively counter the methods that antagonists are using now and further refining for the future. Author is former USMC colonel.
