<br/><br/> Study of the paradox of Nepal's move towards democracy which has been accompanied by increasing political violence both from below in the form of a Maoist insurgency, and from above in the form of the imposition of direct rule by the King. This paper attempts to identify factors which influence the use of violence for political ends including geography, democracy, and social capital.
