As the United States plans to reduce the size of its forces in Japan (some or all of the 20,000 U.S. marines may be moved from Okinawa), Japan may find itself forced to adopt a more active role in global security. This article looks at Japan's changing defence role, its sometimes difficult relations with Asian neighbours, and the evolution of US-Japan defence relations.
