On average resource rich countries especially those that depend economically on the export of resources have tended to be poorer and less competently governed compared to countries with fewer such resources. This Adelphi paper considers the paradox of the "resource curse" by looking at three questions: Why are resource-dependent countries particularly vulnerable to armed conflicts? How do resources influence armed conflicts? How can these problems be addressed?
