Drawing on first hand experience the author describes the insurgency in post Saddam Iraq. He shows that the groups involved are not a unified organization but a variety of competing interests who from time to time find a common cause against the US led coalition. Presents the insurgency in its historical context noting the increasing importance of the political dimension. Also notes the limited success of counterinsurgency operations and warns of the possiblity of a slide into more serious civil war. Author is Professor of Strategic Studies, U.S. Naval War College.
