This article develops a novel theoretical explanation by focusing on the campaigns of ethnoreligious cleansing against non-Christians that swept across numerous Western European polities corresponding to present-day England, France, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, and Spain from the eleventh to the sixteenth centuries.
