Traces the evolution of the Service, from the 1840s, soon after its founding, through to the later period of Brooke rule and then to the post-war British colonial administration. Focuses in particular on the backgrounds, modes of recruitment, training and conditions of service of the officers, who were the mainstay of the Service and formed the point of contact between the governemnt and the local population.
