Desperate measures were therefore employed. Among these were the Q-ships. Based on the Royal Navy's experience of using mystery ships to deal with German submarine threats in the First World War, Q-ships were small well armed US naval vessels (former marchant ships) intended to respond to U-Boats in the north Atlantic.
