N2  - During the Second world War the US Navy had no organised anti-submarine capability. Desperate measures were therefore employed. Among these were the Q-ships. Based on the Royal Navy's experience of using mystery ships to deal with German submarine threats in the First World War, Q-ships were small well armed US naval vessels (former marchant ships) intended to respond to U-Boats in the north Atlantic. Their role was to appear as innocent prey enticing submarines to surface nearby, at which point the Q ship would attack and possibly destroy the U-Boat
