Addresses a wide range of issues that countries in Southeast Asia are facing as they move towards the 21st century. These issues include specific applications of new technologies, such as the region's airline mega-computerisation reservation system; the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in planning and environmental issues; and the official response to IT in the region. Globalisation and the adoption of IT are also seen to bring about new perspectives to the whole issue of State and borders; borders have opened up and economic growth triangles have formed; marine resources are contested; state boundaries become increasingly porous as they are sucked into a virtual economic system. There are also social and environmental challenges, including environmental education for sustainable development and the management of countries' cultural diversities.
