Study of the three way security relationship between Japan, Korea, and USA since the second world war, which finds that a quasi-alliance may be said to exist between Japan and Korea where each is allied with a common third party - the USA. When American commitment to the region is weak the other two parties exhibit less tension over bi-lateral issues, apparently willing to overlook difficulties in favour of over riding security concerns.
