The recent history of Asia seemed to be challenging the stereotypical view of Asia as universally despotic and enslaved; intellectuals then rediscovered these stereotypes in 'Asian values' - a domain where personal freedom plays a lesser role. This collection of papers presents case studies of individual countries to argue the contrary view - that authentic conceptions of freedom can be discerned from historical, religious, political and ideological viewpoints throughout the Asian region.
